Every year, I like to have my students participate in book reports. When students become hands-on, the story becomes alive and students tend to comprehend what is taking place. Therefore, one of the book reports we do is a 'dress-up' report. Students are allowed to choose a book and dress-up as their favorite character. However, students have the option to draw a picture of their favorite character if they do not have a way to dress-up. Below is a copy of the guidelines, rubric, and report form that are used with this book report. The guidelines, rubric, and report form are explained to students in class and sent home in advance to parents.
The book report was a lot of fun for the students. Majority, followed directions completely while some did not, as you will see on the results attached below. I believe the rubric played the biggest role in the overall success. Students and parents knew exactly what expected and to achieve the expectations. As for me, having the rubric helped in assessing the reports. I knew what I was looking for and knew the scores to give for each element.
